How to choose shelter for ice fishing

There are many things to buy when you’re preparing for ice fishing trip. Shelter is just one of them, but in my opinion, it is also the most important piece of ice fishing gear. Without good shelter, it’s hard to relax in comfort. Granted, some people don’t care for comfort and actually enjoy sitting out in freezing cold, but i’m certainly not one of them, and if you’re reading this, chances are, neither are you. The fact that there are so many options to choose from makes the task of choosing good ice fishing shelter even more confusing and exhausting. There are some online reviews and rating lists, as well as ratings on platforms like Cabella and Amazon, but in my opinion, in order to choose the right product, you need to understand the underlying concepts behind it. Why is that particular ice fishing shelter rated well? What can go wrong with the other one? What’s commonly the biggest problem with ice fishing shelters? I think one should know answers to all of these before rushing to make decision. If you’re short on time, you might not agree with me, but in my opinion, when you decide to do something, you should give all your attention to it.

First and foremost, i want to compare ice fishing brands. Knowing which brands are good and which are bad is kind of a shortcut in this process. You can easily disregard any product that doesn’t come from these few brands. Things change, of course. Some brands become less respectable and others rise to take their place. If such a thing happens, i will make sure to update this article to relay most relevant information about ice fishing shelter brands.

My favorite brand of not only shelters, but all kinds of ice fishing gear, is Frabill. There are other brands that are just as good in terms of quality of ice fishing gear, and others that are priced as competitively, but none of them combine these two like Frabill does. Simply put, Frabill’s ice fishing shelters, boots, bibs and everything else is competitively priced, while being made of high quality materials. My 4-person Frabill ice fishing shelter is both well insulated and solidly built. They tweak and improve their designs all the time, so that we, ice fishing enthusiasts, enjoy our hobby better.  Most of my ice fishing gear is made by Frabill. There are other brands that i own and that are prestigous on their own, of course. The best brands making ice fishing gear right now are : Frabill, Clam, Eskimo, Otter. These mostly focus on apparel and such things. When it comes to hard tools like ice augers, StrikeMaster and Stormr are two of my favorites. I’ve had little experience with other aforementioned brands, but i know for a fact that they are reputable manufacturers of quality ice fishing gear.

Shelter prices don’t change all that much from brand to brand. But they do change depending on the type of ice fishing shelter. There are two most popular sorts of ice fishing shelters – hub style, which is basically like well-insulated tent, and flip style, which has unique design that allows it to be set up in minutes, if not seconds. Ice fishing experts who like to be mobile and change spots a lot, usually choose flip style shelters, because they offer superior mobility. In terms of price, they are smaller and cost about the same as much larger hub style shelters though.  So if you’re not that concerned with slightly more weight and longer setup time, i believe hub style shelters will be perfect fit for you. It will take me forever to discuss all the differences, so check out this tutorial on ice-fishing-gear.com.

I guess, that’s it. In this tutorial, i wanted to cover most basic things that everyone looking for good ice shelter needs to know. Hopefully, it was helpful and helps someone make a solid buying decision.
